FAQs
Cover
Why should I buy IPS?
- IPS offers the medical expenses cover you need for a trip
abroad, either as a supplementary cover to an existing medical
expenses insurance you might have or as your primary medical
expenses cover if you do not have another medical expenses
insurance;
- In addition, it provides a wide range of covers you might need
when you go abroad, such as liability, legal aid, baggage,
accident, repatriation, etc. For a complete list review the schedule of benefits;
- Cover can be selected for trips solely within the European
Union or worldwide;
- You can arrange IPS for a long period;
- You can easily apply for IPS via this website or by phone or fax;
- Premium can be refunded in the event of an unexpected earlier return
to your home country.
Who can be covered by this insurance?
- Students, scientists or educational staff members, but also
people getting in-company placement, trainees (vocational
training) and au pairs. Partners and children can also be covered
by IPS.
What does IPS cover?
- IPS can cover medical expenses, emergency dental expenses,
extraordinary cost in case of accidents/illnesses like
repatriation, liability, legal aid, baggage and accidents. For a

schedule of benefits;
Can I choose the level of the medical expenses cover I need with IPS?
- IPS has 3 different packages, to ensure every person can get
the right cover:
- IPS Primary covers medical expenses as a primary
insurance. This is meant for you if you do not have a separate
medical expenses insurance and only if there is no obligation for
you to have the Dutch “Basiszorgverzekering”;
- IPS Secondary offers excess or supplementary medical
expenses cover to a separate primary compulsory coverage for
medical expenses that you already hold, such as the Dutch
“Basiszorgverzekering” or the EU Health Insurance Card. Your
primary insurance must provide cover for medical expenses incurred
abroad as a precondition to your right to make any claim under IPS
Secondary. IPS Secondary provides coverage for medical and dental
expenses only in the event that such expenses are not already
covered under the conditions of your primary insurance, or where
they are not covered under the primary insurance as a result of a
compulsory deductible or benefit limit;
- IPS Basic does not cover medical and dental
expenses. This package is only suitable if you already have
adequate medical expenses insurance that fully covers medical
expenses in the country where you will be staying.
What does the cancellation option provide?
- Please note you can choose this option only if you are
traveling abroad from the Netherlands. When you choose this
option, you are also insured against costs involved in
cancellation, delay to departure and/or costs involved in
discontinuing your trip. Non-refundable travel and accommodation
expenses which you incur when you cancel your trip because of a
sudden unexpected event are covered by our policy (see policy
conditions), and will be reimbursed up to a maximum of EUR 1,200 by IPS so long as you have chosen this cover option and have paid the premium. If you need a higher sum insured, please contact Lippmann.
What cover is provided by the winter and underwater sport option?
- If you take this option, IPS covers you when you practice a
winter sport (including ice hockey) or an underwater sport in
which you use an aqualung. Please note this option is only
available if you choose IPS Primary or IPS Secondary.
I am currently receiving medical treatment.
Are the treatments related to those existing conditions covered under IPS?
- No. If at the commencement of your trip there are
circumstances known or present such that costs can reasonably be
expected to be incurred, these costs are not insured. You can
however enjoy full IPS coverage for unforeseen events not related
to that pre existing condition.
Type of trip and duration
For which trips can I be insured?
- IPS is meant for study trips and trips to increase your work
experience or where you work as an au pair.
For how long can I be insured?
- IPS is intended for trips up to 1 year, for longer trips your
policy can however be renewed after that year.
When does my cover start?
- Cover starts the moment you leave your home address or your
actual address to go abroad.
Am I covered if I go back home or on a holiday?
- A temporary return of up to 4 consecutive weeks to your home
country is covered, where it involves a family visit or is
necessitated by an exceptional event (see policy conditions).
Holidays to your home country or other countries are also covered
for up to 4 consecutive weeks.
